Making sure my clients are taking care of their skin before and after they get a spray tan is absolutely crucial to me. So this is why I want to share this information and knowledge that I have to all of you because no matter how good of a Spray Tan Technician I am, or how good my product is, none of that will matter if my clients are not informed properly of what to do to prep their skin before their tan, as well as how to take care of their skin after the tan to ensure it lasts.

THE DAY BEFORE YOUR SPRAY TAN

Shave or wax to remove unwanted body hair. Manicures and pedicures as well as getting your hair dyed need to be done before your spray tan appointment and never after.  If you can before bed the night before, moisturize from head to toe to give an extra boost to your skin's health (this part is not crucial).

WHY EXFOLIATION IS IMPORTANT

By exfoliating before a spray tan, you are turning your skin into a clean slate for your spray tan consultant. This is the single most important aspect of your before-appointment regimen. A spray tan sets on the topmost layer of your skin; so if the topmost layer of your skin is not at its cleanest, most natural state prior to a spray tan then you will not get the best results. If you do properly exfoliate with an exfoliant designed specifically for spray tanning then you can increase the life of your tan by up to three days.

HOW TO PROPERLY EXFOLIATE

Exfoliate your entire body (using a washcloth works really well.) Use an oil-free soap to remove unwanted residues and return your skin to its CLEANEST state. Make sure the soap you exfoliate with is a translucent body wash and is NOT “creamy” or “moisturizing.” Neutrogena Rainbath Shower Gel is the best to use. Another option is exfoliating with a wash cloth and just warm water WITHOUT using any soap.

WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT

You may choose to wear a bathing suit (thong, shorts, or regular bottoms). Women may also choose to be topless. Pull hair away from face and neck, secure with a hair tie, and remove jewelry.

MOISTURIZING

Everyone thinks that winter is when you moisturize because the air is so dry, but it’s just as important in the summer! The sun’s rays dehydrate your skin, so it’s critical to apply, and then reapply, your moisturizers! The more hydrated your skin, the longer your tan will last!

DON'T CONFUSE YOUR SPRAY TANS FOR SPF

Spray tanning does not provide any SPF protection–you WILL still get sunburned! Be extra careful: Sunburns are no laughing matter, and neither is what happens to you and your skin down the line if you’re not careful!

CHLORINE , HOT TUBS AND SALT WATER

Being in water for a prolonged period of time actually dehydates your skin! Salt and chlorine also dry out your skin, which means your tan won’t last as long unless you (you guessed it!) moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Always rinse off after being in salt water or a chlorine pool, and of course never go swimming until AFTER you’re rinsed off your bronzers!

WHAT SUNSCREENS WORK WELL WITH SPRAY TANNING

* Choose an oil-free sunscreen lotion: the types of oils used in sunscreens are often not the good, moisturizing kind we all know and love, and usually end up drying out your skin!

* Stay away from the aerosols, which don’t provide even coverage, causing an uneven tan.

* Avoid sunblock that contains alcohol, which can dry out your skin.

* Avoid fragrances when at all possible because they often come with oils and alcohols, and are the leading cause of breakouts, which no one needs in swimsuit season!

BELOW ARE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SPRAY TAN SAFE SUNSCREENS:

  • Alba Botanica Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30
  •  Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Non-Greasy Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion with Broad Spectrum SPF 30
  • Babyganics SPF 50 Baby Sunscreen

I love hearing from you, let me know what’s on your mind
